Construction Junctions are Infrastructure Planning and Facilities’s monthly public presentations designed to update/inform the public of various projects currently in design, nearing construction and under construction

Summer parking lot and ramp projects

Communication Arts and Sciences - replace roofs 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 14 and 15

Project background

  • The original roof was installed in 1981
  • Roof is beginning to fail and causing potential structural and other cosmetic building damage
  • Infrared study showed significant moisture within existing roof insulation barrier

Project scope

  • Removal of existing conventional roof systems and installation of new IRMA-style inverted roof.
  • Green Roof being investigated for Roof #6.

Impacts

  • Smells inside building – alleviated by installation of temporary charcoal filters in building fresh air intake
  • Potential sidewalk closure for roofing setup areas

Timeline

  • Construction start: May 2018
  • Construction complete: August 2018

Business College Complex - Addition No. 2 - Pavilion

  • Demolition has begun
  • Lear wing is vacant and all furniture has been remove

  • Sidewalks on the south side of the Eppley building have been closed, with pedestrian traffic diverted to the south side of Shaw Lane

Parking Lot 92 – reconstruction and expansion

  • New storm sewer system is complete
  • Curb and gutter installation is in progress
  • Undercut of existing unsuitable subsoils and replacement with new gravel subbase is ongoing

  • Lot 92 is completely closed throughout the summer
  • MSU Police advise alternative parking in Lots 97 and 91
  • Service Road pedestrian pathway remains open along the north side of the road, with construction safety barriers in place

Solar carports (electrical distribution – renewable energy)

  • Lot 89 – west phase

Carport canopy erection and solar panel install is ongoing

  • Lot 89 – north phase

Foundation ground anchor micropile installation is complete

Foundation installs are on-going

Carport canopy erection is underway

  • Lot 91 – east phase

Foundation ground anchor micropile installation is complete

Foundations installs are on-going

  • Lot 83 – west phase

oAsphalt pavement removal and foundation ground anchor micropile installation is underway

  • Open parking areas in each lot will alternate accordingly as work progresses
  • Lot 89 (west phase) and Lot 91 (east phase) will remain closed during carport erection.

IM Sports West – replace pool and locker room HVAC systems

  • Demolition is complete
  • Structural steel mechanical unit supports have been lifted to the roof

  • Project will continue working around MSU athletic camps and other events.

Interdisciplinary Science and Technology – construct original building

Project milestones (a list of accomplishments/project phases completed during the past month)

  • The expansion of Parking Lot 100 is complete
  • Parking Lot 90 has been taken off-line for construction of the building
  • The construction site has been fenced off for work
  • Excavation for the building basement and foundations has begun

  • The sidewalk on the south side of Service Road remains closed to pedestrian traffic.
  • The sidewalk on the north side of Service Road has been temporarily relocated to the bike lane. This sidewalk will be replaced by the end of June and the walk reopened.
  • During the installation of the water main across Service Road, the east and west bound lanes will be temporarily closed one at a time with traffic altered to two-way on the open side of the road.

Engineering Research Complex – addition and renovations

  • Bid packages have been awarded
  • Site work will start in July

  • Increased construction traffic near the farms east of the Engineering Research Complex

Veterinary Medical Center – alterations to room E100 and corridor

Project milestones (a list of accomplishments/project phases completed during the past month)

  • Mechanical systems have been installed
  • Ceiling grid is in
  • Walls have been finished
  • Lights have been installed

  • The corridor outside E-100 continues to be closed (emergency egress is being maintained)
  • Construction traffic continues at the northwest loading dock

Bessey Hall – alterations to first and second floors

  • Flooring and paint on the second floor will be complete by June 6
  • Flooring and paint on the first floor will be complete by July 14
  • Project is on schedule to be completed by Aug. 31

  • Access remains open to the elevator and to the office suites during construction

Engineering Research – Hulett Rd. – Addition No. 2 – Food Processing Innovation Center

  • Demolition has been completed
  • West foundations are being installed
  • New water service is being installed

  • None

Ralph Young Track – replace field hockey playing surface

  • Porous asphalt layer installation is complete
  • Irrigation upgrades are completed
  • Ball control netting installation is complete

  • Sidewalk north of track continues to be closed through duration of project

1855 Place

  • All single student apartment buildings have reached substantial completion with the exception of the A Building. (excluding exteriors)
  • Exterior site work and landscaping efforts continue
  • Single student apartment buildings exterior punch list walks are scheduled for July

  • Parking Ramp 7 elevator shut down for warranty repair will be rescheduled for sometime in July
  • The westernmost lane of Harrison Road will be temporarily closed during the week of July 7 for overhead utility removal work
  • All site fencing is scheduled for removal before Aug. 1

Breslin Student Events Center – facility upgrades

  • Demolition is complete at Quads 2 and 3
  • Concourse terrazzo installation has commenced
  • Strength and Conditioning Center flooring is complete
  • Site work ongoing for Quad 2 and 3 plazas areas

  • Southwest and Hall of History gates remain closed
  • South concourse of Breslin remains closed
  • Sidewalk closure at the south side of Breslin, pedestrian detours in place

Spartan Stadium – South End Zone Addition

  • Building roofing is complete
  • Brick and precast installation on exterior is in progress
  • Restroom fixture installation is complete in men’s restroom
  • Parking Lot 79 work has commenced
  • Plaza and site concrete work is ongoing

  • Sidewalk closures at the south side of Spartan Stadium and Lot 79, pedestrian detours in place
  • Lot 79 closed. No access or parking available

Spartan Stadium – install permanent field lighting

  • Northeast and southeast light poles have been installed
  • LED drivers for the west tower have been installed
  • Light racks for the west tower have been assembled
  • Electrical connections and controls are ongoing
  • Light commissioning scheduled from July 12 through 14

  • Crane lift to install light racks at the west tower is scheduled for July 6. Pedestrian detours will be in place around the west side of the Stadium
