Plant Science Expansion

Project phase: Archived

This project included the construction of a new 90,000-gross-square-feet plant sciences building, demolition of the single-story lecture hall on the northwest corner of the Plant and Soil Sciences Building, and associated renovations required due to the physical connections being made. The expansion is located in the plant sciences area between Plant Biology and Plant and Soil Sciences buildings, at the corner of Wilson Road and Bogue Street in the Central Academic District. The facilities expansion will enable MSU to meet present and future research needs.

This project focused on creating laboratory research and research support space. It is designed to foster interdisciplinary research by encouraging and facilitating interaction amongst all occupants/users in the new addition as well as the existing Plant Biology and Plant and Soil Sciences buildings. The expansion will accommodate fixed equipment such as growth chambers in centralized core facility laboratories, and implement an open laboratory design. The space will be used for research laboratories, laboratory support and office space. The addition will also connect both the Plant Biology and Plant and Soil Sciences buildings. The fourth floor will be shelled only to allow future expansion.

In order to accommodate the project, 79 trees were removed during construction. However, a total of 29 trees were transplanted, with three staying on site (out of the construction area), nine returning to the site after project completion, and one tree transplanted to another location on campus. Also, three trees were transplanted to the Clarence E. Lewis Arboretum and 13 moved to the Horticulture Gardens.

Timeline:

  • Construction began in May 2010 and was substantially completed by the end of 2011, with final completion by spring 2012.
