Spartan Marching Band – Artificial Turf Field

Project phase: Archived

The Spartan Marching Band requires a dependable, safe and available football field surface for band practice in the fall, and a lighted field provides increased safety. An artificial turf field provides a safer and superior surface for the band. Intramural sports activities and other summer sports camps will also use the space.

The field is a regulation-sized, artificial-turf football field, in the same orientation as Spartan Stadium that utilizes recycled tires. The project included a 32-foot-high band tower, spectator seating, fencing and gates, underground utility work, equipment relocation and site restoration.

The turf field and practice facility was named the Forest Akers Trust Practice Complex and the Ed and Wanda Eichler Family Teaching Tower and Gallery to honor a former trustee of MSU as well as a long-time band family.

The new field is located on the southeast corner of Munn Field, north of Shaw Lane between Birch Road and Chestnut Road in the Athletic and Recreation District.
