IPF’s Marla Pancost and June Messner have been honored at Michigan State University’s 2017 Retirement and Service Awards Convocation for 50 and 55 years respectively. The two employees were among nearly 100 IPF employees recognized for their service to the university.

In 1967, MSU shut down for the first time due to heavy snowfall. That year, Marla Pancost, now of IPF’s Support Services, also began her 50 years of service to MSU. Fresh out of high school, Marla spent her first seven years working for the Office of the Registrar and Accounting as a key-punch operator.

“It used to be that the only way to get information into a computer was by reading a card with all sorts of little punches on it. I made the holes,” Marla recalled. “During registration, they had what they called ‘The Pit’ where students could add and drop classes. It was one of the big gymnasiums on campus. All the students went down into the pit and got all of their classes and this was done by the little cards with punches in it.”

It was in 1976 that Marla found a home at MSU’s Physical Plant (now IPF), where she has worked ever since. When she started, she and three other employees were responsible for documenting the Physical Plant’s employees’ payroll, benefits, absences, vacations, promotions and other personnel information.

“We hand entered everything,” Marla said. “That’s the biggest difference between now and then. Most of the time, everything’s by email now, everything’s electronic.”

Despite the many changes over the last 50 years, Marla has no plans to leave IPF.

“I love my job. The people I work with, that’s what’s keeping me here,” she said. “I really would miss having those interactions every single day. I feel very much a part of a family here. As long as I’m healthy, as long as I like my job, as long as I like the people I work with, I’ll stay.”

It is a sentiment June Messner of IPF’s Custodial Services can agree with.

“I just like the people. It keeps the mind active. I like to be around people and I like to be doing stuff. It keeps you young,” June said.

Like Marla, June began her 55 years of service to MSU right out of high school. After a few years of back-and-forth between departments and taking time off to raise her children, June settled into her role at the Physical Plant in 1978.

“When I first started here, we took care of all room reservations on campus, but of course that’s long gone, we don’t do anything like that anymore,” she said.

June’s focus now is HR personnel work for custodial services. June had similar experiences to Marla over the years and recalls completing all of her work by hand and on typewriters.

“Which I’m still using,” June said.

Indeed, a large typewriter sits on her back desk behind her office chair.

“Of course, everything goes on the computer now,” June added.

June enjoys her time working for MSU and makes the most of the opportunities that come with it. She refers to her family as being quite the sportsmen, reserving seats at Spartan football games for years. Like Marla, June has no plans to retire, preferring to stay an essential part of IPF.
