IPF develops new text-messaging service for campus phones

July 31, 2014

IPF Telecommunication Systems has recently developed a new service that allows text messaging to work across all of the East Lansing, Detroit and Grand Rapids campus phone numbers. This means that campus users can now send and receive SMS and MMS messages to and from their 10-digit campus phone numbers.

IPF offers the service as two options:

Personal access

  • Access messages via an application (Windows, Mac OSX, iOS, Android, Web). The application works similarly to an instant-message application such that when people send messages, a pop-up shows up so the user can send and receive threaded messages.
  • Use Case: Individuals or departments can use this application with their existing phone numbers. Users no longer have to give out their personal cell-phone number to send messages and can receive the messages people are probably already sending to the number. Multiple people can be logged into one account.
  • Billing: The department account is billed directly per number used with the service, including unlimited messages.

API access

  • Have applications send and receive text messages as notifications to employees, customers, etc. Uses a REST API that can be triggered from the applications to send to multiple people at once. It can also build a two-way system for people to use for 2-factor authentication, notification systems, group chat systems, etc.
  • Use Case: Built for programmers to extend their existing applications to enable text messaging. This service is not to be used for bulk-messaging or bulk-advertising (all users must be opt-in).
  • Billing: The department account is billed directly per number used with the service, including unlimited messages.
