- The Interdisciplinary Science and Technology Building (ISTB) is part of the Strategic Academic Development Initiative to provide modern teaching and interdisciplinary research space necessary to support significant growth in STEM-related fields.
- The ISTB, which focuses on research, is necessary to support the University's investment in the Global Impact Initiative (GII) to recruit more than 100 new faculty investigators. The GII will help accelerate finding solutions to the recognized "Grand Challenges" and concurrently propel Michigan State University forward, allowing it to aggressively pursue big ideas, innovation, and global impact.
- The ISTB will provide modern research space that supports and leverages talent recruitment of faculty and students.
- The ISTB will also promote interdisciplinary work, which will provide a competitive advantage for multidisciplinary grants, such as those from the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health.
- This new building, coupled with strategic renovations and improved utilization of existing space, will allow the university to align its research capacity with the timing of the recruitment of the new GII funded faculty.
- The facility will be located in the South Academic District adjacent to the Bott Building for Nursing Education and Research, Bio Engineering Facility and the Clinical Center
- This facility is part of the Strategic Academic Development Initiative and will:
- Provide modern teaching and interdisciplinary research space necessary to support significant growth in STEM-related fields
- Focus on research, which is necessary to support the university’s investment in the Global Impact Initiative (GII) to recruit more than 100 new faculty investigators
- Placement of the ISTB facility adjacent to other core research facilities will continue the strategic development of a neighborhood of scientific research in the biomedical and biological sciences.
- Construction of a six-story structure of approximately 160,000 gross square feet which will include:
- Wet bench laboratories
- Computational research space
- Collaborative space (including areas for shared equipment)
- Site preparation: April 2017
- Construction start: June 2017
- Construction complete: August 2019
- $100,000,000 which includes the costs of construction, utility extension, furnishings and project contingency. This project is being funded by the general fund.
