A National Role with Local Impact: Louie Hengesbach Elected APPA Treasurer-Elect

Louie Hengesbach’s election as Treasurer-Elect of APPA – Leadership in Educational Facilities marks an important professional milestone and creates new opportunities to connect Michigan State University (MSU) with a national network of facilities leaders.
For Hengesbach, the role represents both recognition and responsibility.
“I was a mix of excited, grateful and surprised in a good way,” he said. “APPA has played such an important role in my professional growth, so the opportunity to serve at a national level is both humbling and energizing.”
APPA serves as a leading association for educational facilities of professionals, bringing together individuals responsible for the planning, maintenance and management of campus environments that support learning, research and student life. Through leadership development, professional learning, and collaboration, the organization helps institutions address shared challenges and operate more effectively.
As Treasurer-Elect, Hengesbach will work closely with APPA leadership on financial planning, organizational strategy, and governance. The role includes responsibilities related to budgeting, forecasting, and financial oversight, as well as participation in committees that help shape the organization’s future direction.
While the position carries significant responsibility, it also aligns closely with Hengesbach’s professional strengths and interests. His work emphasizes not only financial management but also ensuring that resources are positioned to support innovation and long-term progress within the profession.
His perspective has been shaped by his experience with Michigan State University’s Infrastructure Planning and Facilities (IPF), where balancing operational needs, long-term planning, and strategic priorities is central to daily work. Within that environment, Hengesbach has developed an approach grounded in transparency, collaboration, and informed decision-making.
“If I had to sum up what I hope to bring, it’s being analytical but practical, while keeping things grounded in transparency and collaboration,” he said.
For MSU, Hengesbach’s election represents more than individual achievement. His involvement at the national level creates opportunities to strengthen connections with peer institutions and bring new ideas and insights back to campus.
A key focus of the role will be engaging with colleagues across the country who are tackling similar challenges in facilities management. Through APPA, Hengesbach will gain exposure to emerging best practices, evolving data strategies, and innovative approaches to resource management.
“I see this as an opportunity to bring back insights on benchmarking, data strategy, and best practices that can help us keep improving,” he said. “MSU already does a lot of great work in facilities, and this is another way to stay innovative and connected.”
Hengesbach’s interest in finance began early, driven by an appreciation for problem-solving. Over time, that interest has evolved through his work in facilities, where financial decisions have a visible and lasting impact on the campus environment.
“In facilities, finance isn’t just numbers on a page,” he said. “It’s helping make projects happen and supporting the campus experience.”
As he steps into this new role, Hengesbach credits the colleagues, mentors and peers who have supported his development throughout his career, both at MSU and within professional networks like APPA.
“I’ve been fortunate to work with people who have been willing to share their time and knowledge,” he said. “I see this role as a chance to pay that forward.”
That commitment to collaboration and shared learning continues to shape his approach to professional involvement. He encourages others in the field to engage with organizations like APPA, emphasizing the value of connecting with peers and learning from collective experience.
“It’s a reminder that many of the challenges we face aren’t unique,” he said. “There’s a whole community willing to work through them together.”
As APPA Treasurer-Elect, Hengesbach will help support the organization’s strategic direction while bringing valuable insights back to MSU, advancing a commitment to leadership, collaboration and continuous improvement that benefits both the institution and the broader higher education community.
