Tips for managing building temperatures on hot days

As temperatures remain at extreme levels, Michigan State University's heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems are working continuously to keep campus buildings comfortable. The MSU community can help reduce the strain on these systems by taking a few simple steps:
- Close blinds to reduce heat from direct sunlight.
- Keep windows closed in air-conditioned buildings.
- Close fume hood sashes or turn off fume hoods when they are not in use.
- Turn off lights and other unnecessary equipment when leaving a space.
These small actions can make a meaningful difference in maintaining comfortable indoor temperatures and improving energy efficiency across campus.
If you have questions or concerns about your building's cooling system, please call Contact IPF at (517) 353-1760 or email cipf@msu.edu. PRINT a Contact IPF flyer for your on campus location.
With the current heat advisory in effect, we also encourage everyone to take precautions when spending time outdoors. Stay hydrated, limit prolonged exposure to the heat when possible, and be aware of the signs of heat-related illness. Additional safety information is available from the Department of Police and Public Safety (DPPS) and the MSU Safe app.
Thank you for doing your part to help keep our campus safe, comfortable, and operating efficiently during this period of extreme heat.
