RETURNING IN 2027: DATE TO BE ANNOUNCED!

Presenting the Art of Bonsai at Hidden Lake Gardens:  

This event is a summer celebration for bonsai artists, enthusiasts or anyone new to bonsai! Come discover the distinct discipline, persistence and quiet contemplation only bonsai can provide. All activities are included with regular admission to HLG with the exception of the bonsai workshops. A tentative schedule has been provided below.

TENTATIVE SCHEDULE: BONSAI EXHIBITION

Bonsai Exhibition space.

11:00 AM – 4:00 PM, Upper Level of the Visitors Center


Come enjoy this extraordinary display of miniature trees showcasing a diverse array of bonsai plants from across Michigan and beyond. Arrive before 3:00 p.m. to vote for your favorite! 

Open to all bonsai enthusiasts who would like to exhibit. Check back for online exhibitor registration for up to three trees. If you plan to bring more than three trees or for more information, please contact the HLG office by emailing hlg@msu.edu or calling 517-431-2060.  Exhibitors, please plan to arrive to set-up before 10:00 a.m. on the day of the event.

A variety of vendors will be present, offering bonsai, plants with bonsai potential, pots, tools, and related items. Don't miss this one-stop shop for all your bonsai needs!

TENTATIVE SCHEDULE: INTRO TO BONSAI WORKSHOP

Workshop Times TBA, Garden Room in the Level of the Visitors Center

Discover the timeless beauty and mindful practice of bonsai. Whether you’re new to the art or simply curious, this hands-on workshop offers the perfect introduction to indoor bonsai care and styling.

Each session is designed for beginners and includes expert instruction, a bonsai tree to work on, and everything you need to begin your bonsai journey, included soil, pot, tools and wiring.

The entrance fee to HLG will be waived for all workshop participants on the day of the event.

A portion of each registration includes a special donation to the Jack Wikle Bonsai Legacy Fund.

TENTATIVE SCHEDULE: DEMONSTRATIONS, ANSWERS & ADVICE

11:00 AM - 2:00 PM Bonsai Display Courtyard

Highly experienced bonsai artists, working on their own trees, will be available to respond to questions and offer advice to visitors. Guests are invited to bring both trained and untrained stock for discussion.
