Digger Day Connects Families with the People and Equipment Behind Campus Operations

More than 200 visitors attended this year's Digger Day at the MSU Horticulture Gardens, one of the gardens' most popular family events that offers a unique opportunity to explore the equipment, people and work behind Michigan State University's campus operations.
Since launching in 2017, Digger Day has welcomed families for a hands-on experience that combines learning, exploration and fun. Hosted by the MSU Horticulture Gardens in partnership with Infrastructure Planning and Facilities (IPF), the annual event gives children and adults an up-close look at the heavy equipment used to build, maintain and care for campus.
Visitors climber aboard excavators, loaders and other equipment while skilled IPF employees answered questions and demonstrated how the machines are used in their daily work. The event also gave families the chance to meet the people behind the equipment and learn more about the careers and expertise that help keep MSU operating year-round.
"Digger Day gives children a chance to see the tools that make things happen, as well as the people who use them," event organizers said.
Beyond the equipment, the event encourages families to explore the MSU Horticulture Gardens while fostering an appreciation for the many teams that support the university. By connecting visitors with the people and professions behind campus operations, Digger Day helps inspire curiosity about skilled trades, construction, landscaping and facilities management.
As one of the gardens' signature summer events, Digger Day continues to provide an engaging experience that brings the community together while highlighting the work that keeps Michigan State University running.
