Harrison Road bridge rehabilitation

Harrison Road between Breslin Student Events Center and Kellogg Hotel & Conference Center

Road work

What is being done?

Notice from the City of East Lansing - The project will include reconstructing the Harrison Road bridge deck that crosses the Red Cedar River just north of Kalamazoo Street (between the Breslin Student Events Center and Kellogg Hotel & Conference Center) and paving north and south of the bridge. The project is estimated to be completed in mid-August.

Updated June 5, 2025

In a collaboration between the City of East Lansing and Michigan State University, Harrison Road will be closed at the Red Cedar River from Monday, June 9, 2025 through Friday, August 22, 2025 for bridge deck replacement work.

Map shows bridge construction over the Red Cedar River at Harrison Road. The pedestrian path will detour down Kalamazoo Street and across the bridge behind Jenison Field House and through the Kellogg Center property. A vehicular detour through MSU’s campus will be provided utilizing Kalamazoo Street, Beal Street, and Michigan Avenue for both. .

Why is this being done?

Work on the west half of the bridge started May 5th while maintaining traffic on the east half of the bridge. Due to structural issues discovered with MSU steam and Consumers Energy gas infrastructure which were not identifiable prior to bridge deck demolition, there is significant additional work that needs to be completed prior to resuming bridge deck replacement work on the west half of the bridge.

To facilitate the additional MSU steam and Consumers Energy gas infrastructure work, bridge deck construction must be shifted to the east half of the bridge. The full road closure is being implemented to maintain a target open to traffic date of August 22, 2025 for the return of MSU students to campus. “The city and MSU realize that this closure will be disruptive to the traveling public, however, traffic impacts will be greater if the project extends beyond the August 22nd open to traffic date,” East Lansing Director of Public Works and Environmental Services Ron Lacasse said.  “By closing the road, we maintain the best chance of maintaining the target open to traffic date.”

How will this impact building occupants?

Harrison Road will be closed at the Red Cedar River from Monday, June 9, 2025 through Friday, August 22, 2025 for bridge deck replacement work.

Please obey all construction barriers, mind all flagmen and patrol officers, and follow posted detours. Your cooperation and patience during this time is appreciated.
