Wells Hall River Viewing Platform Closed after Flood Damage

River viewing platform near Wells Hall

Restricted access

What is being done?

The Wells Hall River Viewing Platform has long been one of the most beloved spots on campus. It gives Spartans the opportunity to get close to the Red Cedar River and engage with the rushing water, the ducks, and the beauty of campus.

Flooding this past spring caused significant damage to the concrete structure of the nearly fifty-year-old platform, compromising its structural integrity. The structure is being evaluated for safety and people are advised to avoid that area. Out of an abundance of caution, the platform is now closed to the public. You will notice fencing along the river trail's edge.

Infrastructure, Planning, and Facilities (IPF) is currently assessing the extent of the damage and evaluating options for repairing or rebuilding the platform. Because any construction along the Red Cedar River requires careful engineering, floodplain permitting, and environmental review, this process is expected extend into next year.
