IPF to Switch off Building Cooling for Cold Season

MSU's Regional Chilled Water Plant on Service Road supplies chilled water for cooling to many buildings on campus. Some buildings have their own independent air conditioning systems.

October 13, 2022

With October upon us, outside temperatures now are consistently in ranges where mechanical building cooling is no longer needed.

Beginning next week, IPF will shut down chillers and associated cooling towers for the season to prepare for deep cleaning and winter freeze protection. We will start in academic buildings and leave research facilities for last. If we have an occasional day when the temperature is warmer than average, building temperatures could rise above the desired setpoint but should still be within range for human comfort.

Cold-Season Energy Conservation Tips

Please do your part to reduce campus energy use. Here are some tips to stay comfortable while minimizing the amount of energy consumed needlessly in campus offices:

  • Check the thermostat: Make sure there are no heat-producing appliances or equipment nearby to disrupt the temperature sensor.
  • Time for a change: Rearrange work areas to lessen exposure to cold areas and drafts. Keep books, boxes and furniture from blocking the registers.
  • Get out the sweaters: An extra layer will help with keeping warm. Scarves and shawls work, too.
  • Focus on feet: Wear warm socks and footwear. Low-wattage heated footrests and radiant panels are available. Desktop models can keep hands warm. Approved models are available from Spartan Marketplace.
  • Cover the window air conditioner: Prevent cold air from coming in by using an interior cover. Your department is responsible for providing covers.
  • Keep doors closed: Please ask your staff, faculty, and students to keep exterior doors closed to minimize heat loss.
  • Keep windows closed: An open window may result in false room readings from the thermostat and may affect the ability of the heating system to operate correctly. If you feel the need to open a window, please close it before you leave the room or office.
    • Ensuring windows are closed and locked also helps improve building security and minimize water intrusion, such as from a heavy storm.
  • Have malfunctioning thermostats repaired: If you believe your thermostat is not working correctly, call IPF at 353-1760 to report it or submit a service request. Your department will not be charged for the service call.

Practicing smart cold-season behaviors helps the university save on heating costs and help MSU achieve its sustainability goals identified in the university's strategic plan.
