Safety tips for winter storm and campus snow removal

February 12, 2025
Snow is coming to the 83 miles of roadway and 124 miles of sidewalks that make up the East Lansing campus.
Please help our snow removal experts to ensure your safety. Snow-removal equipment is large, loud and difficult to stop.
- Avoid darting out in front of or behind equipment and make eye contact with a snow-removal driver before crossing the street in front of you. It may take vehicles significantly more time to stop in snowy, wet or icy conditions.
- Parking and sidewalks: Avoid parking so close to the sidewalk that your car’s bumper hangs over the walk. It creates an obstacle for snow-removal equipment.
- In parking lots: If possible, park in plowed areas or areas with other cars to help snow removal workers quickly clear the unplowed areas without navigating around vehicles.
- In residence hall loops: Parking is prohibited in these loops between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. to allow snow removal workers time to clear them.
- Regarding ice-melt compound: Give it some time to take effect. Also, while safety is priority one, using ice-melt compound responsibly is important to limit negative environmental impacts.
- Give yourself extra time when traveling throughout campus and watch for slippery conditions.
- Dress for the weather and take precautions when walking on ice to prevent falling.
Active snow does accumulate on already cleared walks and roadways so this will be an ongoing process throughout the storm. There is another storm coming in this weekend that could have substantial snow amounts.
