Farm Structure Demolition

large white, domed farm building in disrepair

Overview of Scope:

Selective demolition of structures which have outlived their useful life will be more common in the years ahead as capital renewal costs are explored further.

Multiple structures on the south campus farms will be demolished. Of the 22 structures across six sites that are being razed, many are sheds or storage buildings which have fallen into disrepair. This demolition project will include safely removing hazardous materials and capping off utilities in these structures. Two barns have been identified and attempts to salvage materials will be made. Where possible the cement, bricks, and blocks from this project will be crushed here on campus and recycled back into roads and walkways.

Completion of this project will avoid $3-4M in deferred renewal cost and another $2-3M in 10-year capital renewal needs.

The land from this project will be utilized in several ways:

  • Conversion back to farmland for research support by growing hay and corn, essential crops for beef and dairy operations;
  • Held as fallow land for future needs that meet updated standards and the desire of researchers beneficial to the university mission;
  • Eventually to hold modern structures with space that can be adapted as needs arise. Intentionally capping utilities in certain locations keeps the infrastructure available for these future structures.
