Michigan State University (MSU) hosts thousands of students, faculty, and staff—and behind the scenes, dedicated individuals work to keep the campus safe. One of those individuals is Ben Graham, who recently started his new role as MSU’s Fire Extinguisher Maintainer within Infrastructure Planning and Facilities (IPF).

Ben will be responsible for inspecting and maintaining over 5,300 fire extinguishers across campus, ensuring they’re ready in case of emergencies. His job includes replacing extinguishers that need recharging or hydrotesting, checking for any damage, and helping set up fire safety protocols in new buildings.

Fire extinguishers play a crucial role in fire prevention, and Ben will be working closely with multiple departments, including MSU Environmental Health & Safety, Athletics, Residential and Hospitality Services, and various academic and research facilities.

For those wondering how long a fire extinguisher lasts, Ben explains, “Fire extinguishers need to be recharged every six years and hydrotested every 12 years. If one is used, it should be replaced or refilled immediately.”

Ben, a Perry, MI native and MSU fan, has been part of IPF since 2016. His journey to this role started on IPF's Setup Crew, where he worked on everything from athletic events to campus moves. His interest in fire safety grew after shadowing his predecessor, Jed Asher, which led him to pursue the necessary training and certifications, including OSHA 30, fire extinguisher awareness, and confined space courses.

If you ever need to report a used or damaged fire extinguisher on campus, call 911 in case of an emergency, and they will coordinate with the Fire Marshal to replace a discharged fire extinguisher.

Welcome Ben to this vital role in keeping our campus safe!
