Recyclemania continues through March

As a part of the annual RecycleMania college and university waste reduction competition spanning the months of February and March, the MSU Surplus Store and Recycling Center is hosting special events and promoting programs that help Spartans reduce waste.

How you can get involved:

  • Reduce the amount of waste you are generating on campus and increase your recycling efforts. Visit the MSU Community Reuse webpage to see all of the materials the SSRC accepts.
  • Recycle/reuse your books - recycling and diversion rates are based on weight, so contributing those heavy tomes gathering dust on your shelves can really make a difference. Books from MSU departments can be picked up at no cost by submitting a service request, or you may drop them off at the Surplus Store or the Drop-off Center.
  • Become a Waste Warrior - Join the team of staff and faculty from across campus who pledge to be part of the solution that will lead MSU down the path towards zero waste.

Since the founding of RecycleMania in 2001, more than 1,000 colleges across North America have participated in the tournament. In the 2018 competition, the program set records by diverting more than 68.6 million pounds of waste from landfills, which is estimated to have prevented the release of over 94,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide.

MSU to participate in Earth Hour

MSU’s observance of Earth Hour is quickly approaching, and IPF, along with MSU Sustainability encourages the campus community to participate.

At noon on Friday, March 27, we encourage you to turn off all non-essential lighting to encourage sustainable practices on campus. Earth Hour depends on all of us to present a clear message of solidarity to protect our world’s biodiversity, communities and natural environments.

How you can participate:

  • Switch off non-essential lights in your buildings, facilities and signage during Earth Hour from noon – 1 p.m.
  • For offices that close over the lunch hour, ensure that employees switch off lights when they leave for lunch.
  • For larger buildings, plan ahead with facilities and building managers to manage the logistics of switching off non-essential lighting for Earth Hour, including neon lights – in and around your properties.
  • Go to www.earthhour.org to find all our social media properties and use #EarthHour and #Connect2Earth in your conversations to help spread the message wider.
  • Elect ongoing Earth Hour champions for your building or college. Their job will be to ensure lights are turned off not only for the hour but at the end of each working day.

Summer long-term vehicle leasing

IPF Transportation Services reminds all their campus customers that now is the time to submit requests for long-term vehicle leasing for Summer 2020.

You can submit your request via an IPF Service Request, or by completing and emailing the Request for Long-Term Lease of a University Vehicle form to IPF.MotorPool@msu.edu.

There is no deadline for submissions, but requests are taken on a first-come-first-served basis, and so those who delay may not be able to get the vehicle type they desire.

MSU Community Reuse

The Community Reuse program replaces the popular Community Reuse Days. The new program is available throughout the year during normal business hours.

The MSU community can drop off a wide variety of items for reuse and recycling. Any revenue generated from the sale of these items is used to support additional community programming. Materials donated are considered "waste material of no value" for tax purposes; therefore, donation receipts for tax purposes will not be provided. Items can be brought to the north side of the building at the door labeled "Merchandise Pickup".

What Has Changed?

  • The drop off remains free of charge with the exception of TV’s and computer monitors. We will continue to accept these items, but there is a $10 per screen fee to cover the expense of recycling.
  • Large, office-type copy machines will no longer be accepted.
  • Clean, reusable clothing will now be accepted.

For additional information about materials being accepted, visit the MSU Community Reuse webpage.
