Keeping Spartans safe is our #1 priority
Since the beginning of this "new normal," IPF has continued to be on the ground supporting campus and the needs of our campus partners.
From providing the infrastructure that enabled on-campus COVID testing to keeping the power and water flowing to support continuing research efforts, Team IPF has been there.
And as our campus partners gear up for the return of students for fall semester, we will continue to provide the skills, resources and ingenuity necessary to keep this great university running 24/7/365.
Here are just a sample of the initiatives that IPF is undertaking, often alongside our campus partners, to help ensure that all Spartans can safely continue to advance knowledge and transform lives.
Cleaning for health
- Routine disinfecting of common touch points (railings, handles, buttons, etc.).
- More frequent cleaning/disinfecting of high-traffic areas (bathrooms, lounges, etc.).
- Treating of tech stations, computer labs and other high-touch areas with Microbcare.
- Use of disinfectant misting units in classrooms and other gathering locations.
Supporting physical distancing measures
- Removal of many classroom desks/tables/chairs and banding of seats in lecture halls to promote minimum six-foot distancing.
- Installation of polycarbonate (plexiglass) shields in locations around campus where closer face-to-face interactions are necessary.
- Application of floor decals around campus to support proper physical distancing in waiting areas/lines.
Environment improvements
- Installation of high-efficiency air filters in HVAC systems across campus.
- Investing in UV sterilizer units for passenger elevators across campus.
- Flushing of water lines prior to building occupancy.
- Inauguration of new Water Treatment Facility and Storage Tower (late summer).
- Installation of hand sanitizer stations across campus.
Ensuring safety of recycling/sustainability efforts
- Limiting types of plastic recycling to eliminate need for hand sorting of materials.
- Updating signage on recycling bins/stations.
- Limiting open hours of Drop-off Center to encourage safe recycling.
- Installation of curbside pick up areas at MSU Surplus with expansion of online sales.
Encouraging safe behavior
- Application of floor decals to ensure proper physical distancing in waiting lines/areas.
- Installation of signage inside of campus facilities reminding occupants of physical distancing and mask wearing requirements.
- Installation of lawn signs and high-traffic area signage reminding campus users of mask wearing requirement.
Maintaining the health of Team IPF members
- Implementation of pre-work COVID screening tool for employee health self-assessment.
- Procurement of personal protection equipment for our employees.
- Following university requirements for physical distancing and proper face covering compliance (except when masks could become safety issue around equipment or in wet conditions, and in situations where employees can practice adequate physical distancing out-of-doors while working).
MSU Surplus Store and Recycling Center
Town hall webinars
Beverage container recycling
- Thursday, Aug. 20, 7 - 8 p.m.
- Join your friends at the SSRC for a talk on the ins and outs of recycling your beverage containers - plastic and glass bottles, metal cans and cartons. Where do they go? What happens during processing? What do they become? An open Q & A session will follow our talk. Once you register you will be emailed a link to attend.
Surplus Store updates
- Thursday, Sept. 10, 7- 8 p.m.
- Join us to discuss what's new with the MSU Surplus Store. We'll explain our push to move more and more products for sale online, what curbside pickup looks like and share info on vehicle sales and bidding on auction items. An open Q & A session will follow our talk. Once you register you will be emailed a link to attend the event.
Contamination and the recycling stream
- Watch MSU Recycling's Dave Smith discuss recycling contamination and what to be on the lookout for to keep the stream clean.
- For more information on the effects of recycling contamination visit the MSU Recycling blog and watch the recent town hall webinar featuring SSRC's Katie Deska, Chris Hewitt and Dave Smith.
MSU Bikes
Tour de MSU
This 9.5-mile tour of the Michigan State University campus will not only introduce you to most of the academic, athletic and recreational sports facilities, but also the beauty of campus and the many bike-friendly facilities that we offer to support and encourage bicycling at MSU. The self-guided tour starts and stops at the MSU Bikes Service Center, home to MSU’s own full-service bike shop. This tour was created in partnership with the University Activities Board and Residence Education and Housing Services.
IPF Sign Shop
At MSU, we have our very own Sign Shop dedicated to visual and graphic design, located in room 126 of the Communication Arts and Sciences building. This one-stop shop is staffed by IPF crew members Kim Piper and Kay Steele, who together, have 60 years of combined work experience.
Their work ranges from room signage to life-sized Sparty cutouts; they even create billboard-size visuals. It is common to see sign makers team up with other trades workers such as carpenters, painters, sheet metal workers and glaziers.
The number of services they offer is immense, and includes consultation, design, production and installation of:
Donor walls | Historical displays
Trophy, award and plaque plates | Engraved signage
Nameplates and nametags | Wayfinding and room numbering
New building signage | ADA compliant signs
Conference displays | Large format posters
Table top displays | Banners (interior and exterior)
Exterior construction signage | Yard signs
Custom matting and framing | Vinyl graphics
Window graphics | Privacy film |
Most buildings on campus are currently being provided with signs, stickers and banners to educate users on proper physical distancing and mask wearing requirements due to the COVID outbreak.
If you have specialized signage needs beyond those which are being provided, please contact the IPF Sign Shop at 517-432-2468.
Get to know your IPF crews: Paint Shop
The years and breadth of experience this team possesses makes them a formidable talent, and their attention to customer services has their campus partners coming back time and time again for their expertise.
IPF helps MSU surpass energy goals
MSU has been recognized by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for surpassing its Better Buildings Challenge goal, set almost 10 years ago.
Steam valves to steampunk
When you think of Heavy Metal as an art form, you might think of some of the great practitioners – Black Sabbath, Metallica and Iron Maiden — but what about IPF?
