Wise space scheduling saves energy and dollars
Have you ever tried to book classroom space for an evening or weekend event, only to find that the room you want shows “Blackout: Not in Use – Energy Conservation”?
What does that mean? And furthermore, why should you care?
About 10 years ago, representatives from IPF, RHS, Sustainability and the Registrar’s Office got together to discuss ways the university could utilize classroom space more efficiently, saving both energy and money.
After looking at existing evening/weekend utilization, it was decided that by consolidating events that had been spread out across a large number of buildings on campus into a more focused number of facilities, turning down the heat in strategically chosen "Energy Savings Buildings" on evenings/weekends and blocking out their availability in the classroom scheduling system, the university could capture significant energy costs savings.
This can sometimes make finding available space more challenging, but advanced planning and location flexibility can help limit some of the inconvenience.
We know that there are times, due to unique circumstances (close access needed to ample parking, special technology needs, etc.), when only certain spaces will suffice. When those instances arise, IPF can work with the Registrar’s Office to make those spaces temporarily available.
However, it is important to understand that these decisions can have greater energy impact than might be expected.
Heating systems are oftentimes “zoned” – one air-handling unit controlling the temperature of several spaces within a building. Your request for one classroom can require the heating of several other adjacent spaces. The more spaces that are heated, the costlier it is for the university.
So, when making special requests for blacked-out spaces, consider the reasons why you think only that space will do, and whether some small concessions could allow for more energy-efficient operations, and cost savings for MSU.

Recyclemania is here!
As a part of the annual RecycleMania college and university waste reduction competition spanning the months of February and March, the MSU Surplus Store and Recycling Center is hosting special events and promoting programs that help Spartans reduce waste.
Activities include:
- Office clean-outs (Feb. 10 - March 10)
- Electronic waste collection (March 1-28)
- Collection to reuse/recycle books
- Upcycled Valentine’s Craft Workshop (Feb. 10)
- Tours of the Material Recovery Facility (March 11)
- Waste Warrior info sessions
- More to be announced
Since the founding of RecycleMania in 2001, more than 1,000 colleges across North America have participated in the tournament. In the 2018 competition, the program set records by diverting more than 68.6 million pounds of waste from landfills, which is estimated to have prevented the release of over 94,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide.
How you can get involved:
- Reduce the amount of waste you are generating on campus and increase your recycling efforts.
- Recycle/reuse your books - recycling and diversion rates are based on weight, so contributing those heavy tomes gathering dust on your shelves can really make a difference. Books from MSU departments can be picked up at no cost by submitting a service request, or you may drop them off at the Surplus Store or the Drop-off Center.
- Recycle your electronics - university and personally owned electronics will be accepted March 1 through 28. Watch the site for details coming soon.
- Become a Waste Warrior - Join the team of staff and faculty from across campus who pledge to be part of the solution that will lead MSU down the path towards zero waste.
- Schedule an Office Clean-Out - MSU Surplus Store and Recycling Center is offering Waste Warriors office clean-out collection services from Feb. 10 through March 10, including confidential paper shredding, general recycling and Surplus goods.
- Participate in a Recycling Sweep - register to help "sweep" the Breslin Student Events Center after the Feb. 25 and March 1 basketball games to collect recyclables and compostables.

MSU earns 2019 Tree Campus USA recognition
The Tree Campus USA program honors colleges and universities for effective campus forest management and for engaging staff and students in conservation goals. MSU achieved the title by meeting Tree Campus USA’s five standards, which include maintaining a tree advisory committee, a campus tree-care plan, dedicated annual expenditures for its campus tree program, an Arbor Day observance and student service-learning project.
"This is our third straight year earning the Tree Campus USA certification for MSU," said Matt Bailey, Landscape Services manager. "This recognition acknowledges the hard work and dedication of Landscape Services’ team of arborists and those at IPF that protect, install and design spaces for trees across campus.
