MSU saves big with LED lighting retrofits

IPF’s Planning, Design and Construction department (PDC) recently performed energy cost savings studies on both the Grand River Avenue and Shaw Lane Parking Ramps, evaluating the benefits of replacing existing metal halide lighting with energy efficient LEDs. Installing LED retrofit lamps in existing fixtures, as opposed to replacing entire fixtures with new units, was found to be the lowest cost option that would greatly improve performance.

They also looked at annual maintenance-related savings (the cost of maintaining old, outdated fixtures vs. new LED units) by studying labor costs incurred on several years’ worth of work orders.

The results?

Upgrading existing fixtures in both ramps with self-ballasted LED retrofit lamps is projected to save the university more than $50,272 in reduced energy and maintenance costs annually, with an estimated two-year simple payback. After deducting the initial LED retrofit lamp installation cost, the project will yield an overall projected savings of more than $400,000 in lighting-related energy and maintenance costs over the next 10 years, based on the life expectancy of the LED lamps.

Reducing plastics waste one bottle at a time

According to the Earth Day Network, we humans buy almost one million plastic bottles per minute, with only about 23% percent being recycled in the U.S.; most end up in landfills or incinerators, and millions litter America’s streets, parks and waterways.

But there are alternatives, including filling reusable bottles with fresh, clean, filtered water.

There are more than 180 locations across campus where filtered water is available with just the press of a button.

IPF has spent $600,000 over three years to install filtered drinking fountains and water-bottle fill stations in addition to the units RHS has installed in residence halls.

Users may notice that some water stations have lights indicating when the filter is nearing its capacity. Please know that even if the filter indicator shows red, the dispenser will still provide clean, filtered water and can continue to be used until the filter is replaced. If the filter were to reach the end of its life completely, the station will stop dispensing water.

Thank you for helping keep plastics waste out of our landfills and waterways!

Use of space heaters on campus

The university has established heating and cooling season building temperature policies to provide comfortable conditions in support of the university’s educational mission while advancing MSU’s energy conservation goals. Space heaters are regulated because they can create system imbalances, overload building electrical circuits and use a significant amount of energy. If used improperly, space heaters can also become a fire hazard.

Most campus spaces are heated to 69 degrees during the winter. Because spaces on campus vary greatly in age, construction and function, exceptions will occur. Please contact us if you experience temperature discomfort on a regular basis at (517) 353-1760. We will identify the source of the problem and work to provide a comfortable work environment.

Where space temperatures fall within university guidelines, several low wattage personal heaters have been approved that meet safety and efficiency guidelines. A list of approved heaters available through Spartan Marketplace can be found here.

Bogue Street protected bike lanes pilot project extended

Due to overwhelming positive feedback, and as to not create disruptions during fall semester activities, the Bogue Street protected bike lanes pilot project has been extended.

Removal of the temporary barriers along Bogue Street will occur over the winter break, after most students have left for the holidays.

Data gathered during the semester will be analyzed to determine if a permanent solution should be implemented.

If you would like to provide feedback about the project, you can do so through December 2019 at https://msu.crowdicity.com/category/120960

Watch Tim Potter, MSU Bikes sustainable transportation manager, talk more about the benefits of this project.

Buildings and photos and maps...oh my!

Have you checked out the Facilities Information Tool lately?

The application was created to allow you access to current and historical facility and infrastructure related information maintained by the university. The information comes from a variety of systems used to manage the planning, design, construction and maintenance of facilities and infrastructure.

The application is used by staff from all over the university who need to lookup building numbers, determine when structures were built, search the comprehensive database of projects related to each facility, find building floor plans, determine where facilities are located and much, much more.

There is also a plethora of historical maps and photographs of the university dating back to the 1800's at your disposal.

Explore on!

Be a "winter-smart" Spartan!

Smart Spartans know that when Michigan becomes a "winter wonderland" good snow practices will keep you safe and secure.

Here are some handy tips to help you navigate upcoming winter challenges.

Traveling to and across campus

  • Don’t rush – give yourself plenty of time to get to work/class.
  • Drive carefully.
  • Dress warmly.
  • Wear sensible shoes.
  • Watch where you are walking.
  • Shorten the length of your stride while walking.
  • Check the forecast before heading outside.

Snowplows

  • Do not dart in front of or behind snow-removal equipment. It is large, loud and difficult to stop quickly.
  • Make eye contact with snow-removal equipment operator before crossing in front of them.

Salt and ice-melt compound

  • Dial (517) 355-1855 to report icy spots on campus.
  • Help us keep building entrance ways safe by sprinkling ice-melt compound on slick spots. Buckets of compound are available at most building entrances.
  • Please remember that it takes time for the ice-melt compound to take effect.

Sidewalks

  • Do not park so close to the sidewalk that your car’s bumper hangs over it.

Parking lots

  • Avoid parking in sections of a lot that have not yet been cleared.
  • Park where it’s been plowed or wait a few minutes for the driver to finish and then park in the cleared lot.

Residence hall parking loops

  • Parking is prohibited in residence hall loops from 2 to 6 a.m.

Remember...to request services or to report dangerous spots on campus, call ContactMSU at (517) 355-1855.

Peddling life-saving ideas

MSU Bikes' Tim Potter saw a problem and wanted to be part of a solution.

From 2013 to 2017, 3,958 cyclists died in the US alone; 98% of these the result of collisions with motor vehicles.

New substation provides grounds for improved service

IPF Landscape Services staff descended on the site of the former River Water Research Center to clear years of plant overgrowth and clean out unused office and storage space, in preparation for its use as a regional substation for snow removal, grounds maintenance and post-event trash collection.
