STEM facility blooms from dormant power plant roots

It’s hard not to notice the two huge additions rising adjacent to the old Shaw Lane Power Plant. A myriad of activity is resulting in the erection of a first-of-its-kind for MSU – a STEM teaching and research facility constructed using mass timber.

R.I.C.E. - helping reduce MSU's carbon footprint

The Reciprocating Internal Combustion Engine (R.I.C.E.) technology that is being deployed at the T.B. Simon Power Plant is more responsive, offers additional flexibility, and operates at higher efficiency than the traditional generation units currently in use.

Tim Potter: a life behind (handle)bars

“I decided to start a bike shop in my parent’s basement with the help of my best friend,” Potter said. “First, we purchased 100 bikes from an MSU Salvage (now MSU Surplus Store) auction for five dollars each; then we bought out the tools and parts from a local bike shop that was going out of business.”

MSU Water Quality Report now available

The latest Water Quality Report for Michigan State University has been published, covering 2019 sample results. MSU closely monitors the source water and the treated drinking water to ensure a high level of quality and safety is maintained.

After being drawn from groundwater wells on south campus and then treated, the water is pumped to most buildings on campus through a network of about 74 miles of water mains.

The report also details the water treatment facility and water tower that is under construction and how they will improve water quality and infrastructure on campus. Once the facility goes online, noticeable water quality improvements may take time to work through the campus-wide system and in each building's system.

Keeping Spartans Safe: IPF cleaning protocols

IPF is committed to providing a safe, healthy environment for research and education.

Detailed cleaning levels are available at our custodial service level page. Additionally, custodial staff follow CDC guidelines for cleaning a non-health care facility in response to a symptomatic individual.

MSU Bikes now handling all used/surplus bike sales

Those of you who walk or bike along the north river path of campus may have noticed that MSU Bikes has a LOT of “new” bikes outside the Center, some tagged with yellow or red tags and others with the white impound notices.

Photo of used bikes for sale at the MSU Bikes Service Center

What’s going on over there you wonder? Well, MSU Bikes is now the home for all things bikes, which means they’ll now be processing (sorting out the good, the bad and the useful) all of the abandoned and impounded bikes that MSU Parking has released after the required waiting period. So, this means that the Surplus Store will no longer be selling the abandoned bikes as they have for decades.

This is a real benefit to the university community and others as the MSU Bikes’ knowledgeable crew is on hand to answer questions, assess problems and provide the necessary repairs making it a convenient and time-saving visit.

Unfortunately, there is only room for displaying so many bikes at a time outside the Center in an orderly, secure way, so the selection isn’t as broad as it used to be at the Surplus Store, but the benefits to the customers and university far outweigh the down-side to this change. As soon as the Center is able to add more staff, they plan on processing many more of these bikes to give more options to the community that has found the supply of affordable used bikes drying up.

Photo of IPF custodial crew wearing masks and holding up their award and YETI bottle
2020 marks the 40th anniversary of the annual IPF Custodial Services Recognition Event that celebrates team members' hard work and dedication. Due to the COVID outbreak, the usual event had to be canceled. However, department leaders still wanted to do something special for their team members, so they visited crews at work and handed out (at a six-foot distance, and wearing masks) service award key chains as well as snazzy YETI cups to team members.

IPF crew power washing Beaumont Tower
IPF Roofing crew members power wash Beaumont Tower as part of their continuing building beautification and preservation project. While workers wash and seal facility exteriors, they are on the lookout for other issues such as aged/damaged caulking and mortar joints along with drainage issues that can be fixed before they result in larger problems.
